Before Janet There Was Whitney

June 30th, 2006 ( June 30th, 2006 )

Whitney Houston Anyone who knows me knows that I am a Janet Jackson fan and have been for many years now. What many do not know is that before I was a fan of Janet the singer, I was a fan of the one and only Whitney Hosuton. Now, don’t get me wrong, I still love Whitney, but the Whitney that mesmerized me so many years ago has long since vanished, but thanks to the magic of You Tube, I can now go back in time and enjoy the voice of a woman who first had me singing into my hairbrush standing in front of my mirror in the bathroom.

Browsing You Tube turns up a whole vault of old Whitney Houston performances I either hadn’t seen in years, or seen at all.As I was sitting here tonight marveling at how beautiful and graceful Whitney used to be, I decided to share two of my favorite Whitney clips I found.

This clip is from an HBO special for the GI’s.I saw this live when I was about 15 and I think this was the begining of my love affair with “The Voice”.Whitney sang “Didn’t We Almost Have It All” and brought the house down.I still get all emotional just watching it.

This next clip I had never seen before and is just a bit of an interview Rolling Stone did with her. What I love about this clip is it shows just how beautiful Whitney was.She spoke so softly and gracefully, she was just a joy to behold.Looking at this clip you can easily see why she was quickly branded America’s Princess.

See for yourself and enjoy!

Yeah I hear you BH. I remember when Whitney was a teen model, she was the first black girl I ever saw in Seventeen magazine, so that’s what initially drew me to her. YouTube is just the BOMB isn’t it? Thanks for the memory, seriously! AE

Do you think Bobby contributed to her downfall? I say yes. He was young and still kind of wild plus he had children all over the place (signs he would be a bad mate). However, I couldn’t image how hard it must be for someone like Whitney to find a man, especially a black man. Look at Beyonce and Jay-Z. Yuck! I know she can do better.

I think most people still blame Bobby, but I am not so sure.Whitney is a grown woman who can make her own decisions and honestly, I think her angel routine from back in the day was fake.By her third album Whitney’s soft spoken demeanor had already been replaced with a much harder and not so classy edge.

After a certain amount of time it became harder and harder for Whitney to keep that facade up and eventually the true Whitney began to shine through.Simply put, Whitney was straight ghetto before she met Bobby and if anything, Bobby made her feel comfortable enough to show that.

As for the drugs, again, I think Bobby was an enabler.Being a druggy himself allowed Whitney, who was no stranger to drugs (her brother was arrested for drug use) herself, to feel comfortable doing them with and around Booby.Whether he actually introduced her to drugs or not is unknown.I personally think he did.

In any case, I would love to see the 1985 big wig wearing Whitney make a comeback. That’s the Whit I know and love and would support fully.

Wow that video really took me back after watching that I did a search on youtube and found so many Whitney hits.Watching those videos made me kind of sad for Whitney she was the girl no one could touch her vocally then she let drugs and a trifling man destroy her. What happened to I’m ever woman.I hope the real Whitney emerges one day because the R&b world really needs her.Damn from the looks of it her child needs her.How many kids does Bobby Brown have ?because when he was on the Tyra Banks show he said he only has 4 that’s including his daughter with Whitney Houston.Maybe he meant those were the only one he was claiming or that he only brought those 4 to the show.

We will never see that Whitney again. She is but a distant memory.
