Black Women and Tattoos

Sistah’s and tattoos… lawdy… lawdy… lawd.Much like 10 inch nails and purple hair, tattoos are the newest thing Sistah’s have decided to overdo.

I swear we as a people are like peacocks… we like to be seen.We are flashy and don’t get me wrong, this can sometimes be a good thing. However, when overdone, we end up looking like fools and such is the case with Sistah’s and multiple tattoos.

I remember back in the day when all women had the same tattoo… a delicate little rose on the ankle. That was back when ladies wanted to be a little edgy, a little sexy, but still feminine.

Well the times sure are a changin’…. but for Sistah’s only.Black women can now be seen Keyshia Colesportin’ tattoos on their breasts, thighs, arms, and even their necks. What kinda woman gets a tattoo on their neck?

I am sure this is all for attention sake and that is the sad part. How sad is it that as women so many of us feel the only way we can get attention is to have outrageous markings all over our bodies in places we shouldn’t be showing off in the first place.

Sad to say, but Sistahs are slowly losing the feminine battle.Between the tattoos, outrageous hair, loud dispositions and 10 inch nails, we seem less like women and more like cartoon characters.

Agreed.Though I must admit when I was younger I thought of getting a tattoo as well Shawna but it was nothing like what I see the girls getting today.I wanted to get a beauty mark but was told they eventually fade away.I wasn’t seeking attention really, just wanted to get my Marilyn Monroe on.

I completely agree with this post! You know how WE do — we always got to do it up REAL big. Now I have a few tattoos that are meaningful to me; when my husband returned from Iraq, we got matching tattoos as a sign of our reunion and further commitment to each other, for instance. But none of my tats cane be seen by the casusal observer — I have no tattoos where they can be seen like that. The ten inch nails and 25-inch weaves in ridiculous colors and the whole nine…it’s just not cute!

  3. Shawna says:

I’m glad you got it SistahGeek.I posted this on My Forum a few months back and the sistas were livid.

I decided to bump this post up after going over to Carol’s Daughter and seeing Mary looking like a hot mess on the front page.

I know she and many sistas think these tattoos look good but many of them are borderline gaudy and take away from the feminine aura I think women and sistas in particular should have.

I find tattoos gross. If i were to get one it would be in a private area which would only be seen when I take off my undergarments.

Mary J and Keisha both look like common street trash.I’d go so far as to say they look like hookers. My brother says the true sign of a tramp is a woman with a tattoo. He calls it the tramp stamp.I won’t go that far but I do think a lot of tattoss is a sign or questionable character on the part of men and women.

Have you seen Persia White from Girlfriends? I can’t help but think someone who mutilates themselves like that has emotional problems.

  7. CLARISSA says:

I THINK THAT SOME OF OYUR COMMENTS ON THESE WOMEN THAT HAVE TATTOOS ARE VERY WRONG. JUST BECAUSE I WOMAN WANTS TO GET A TATTOO DOES NOT MAKE HER EMOTIONALLY UNSTABLE OR COMMON STREET TRASH. IT IS A SHAME THAT YOU CAN CALL A WOMAN COMMON STREET TRASH BECAUSE SHE HAS A TATTOO. I HAVE A TATTOO ON MY UPPER RIGHT ARM OF MY GRANDMOTHER’S NAME WHOM JUST RESENTLY PAST AWAY AND I DON’T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT.

  8. Shawna says:

If you think that is a noble way to honor your Grandmother who has passed then so be it.But why a tattoo? Why have you chosen this way to honor your Grandmother? I ask the same of those who tattoo their children’s names on their body? It is a very weird way to honor someone.

Stop following trends.Stop doing what everyone else is doing.Hang a picture or something, but please stop scarring up your body and thinking it looks cute.I am telling you as a Sister that it looks absolutely horrible to all those who see it… especially men.

  9. Jasmine says:

I disagree. I do believe that too much is too much but I also believe that tattoos can also be tasteful. I prefer to have them in places that aren’t so conspicuous and can be easily covered up if necessary. Since tattoos (like braids) are not always accepted in the work place, we should never go so far as to mutilate our appearance to the point where it is a hinderance to opportunity or growth.

This is one black man who can’t stand to see any tatoos on women. Ladies if you must, just be discreet about it. Place it in an area where only you and your lover can see. After a certain age (30), tattoos are no longer edgy, risque, cute or trendy. They look tacky and only prove that you follow whatever the crowd says is cool. Notice how Eve ‘s breast paws are being retouched out of her photos now more than ever? Call it the mistakes of youth.
I question your judgement if you feel the need to have your child’s or another family member’s name tattooed on your body. Or how about those sisters and brothers who have an ancient Chinese proverb tattoo yet can’t read, speak or understand anything Chinese other than the chicken special on the menu. And let’s not talk about that idiot Mike Tyson and his Maori face tattoo. Think he’ll regret that in a decade or so?

How often do you see Black women with tasteful tattoos? We don’t know what tasteful is anymore. We just wanna be seen and the bigger, louder and more pronounced the tattoo is the more attention it garners and it feeds the soul of insecure women looking for attention.

I’ve always had reservations about women with tats or double ear piercing. I don’t know why. I’ve always found them to be less intelligent, have low paying jobs coupled with bad credit. Not to talk about the type of parents these women will be. Now don’t get me wrong, I will do any of these fine sistas with tats or quadruple ear piercing but I’m not going to have any of them raise my kids and have of my kids grow up to be stupid and confused about who they are

“Now don’t get me wrong, I will do any of these fine sistas with tats or quadruple ear piercing but I’m not going to have any of them raise my kids and have of my kids grow up to be stupid and confused about who they are”

This is why I no longer date black men. They don’t seem to discriminate in who they will stick their dicks in which is why so many of them have children with multiple women.

  14. BlackDoc says:

If you ask me, it’s becoming overkill… especially in places like Detroit… a tattoo on a woman, esp, a black woman (the most beautiful creature on this earth) is so tacky.
