I Have Never Worked A Day In My Life

Yep, that’s right! I am 34 years old and have never held what I call a “Real Job”. And now, all of a sudden, I am about to enter the workforce and I am somewhat frightened. All of my past work experience was short lived and thus I don’t actually consider it work and neither will most employers.

My job at Baskin Robbins when I was 15 probably won’t count towards much.Neither will my part time job at McDonald’s when I was 18, or my stint as a Hairdresser working with my Grandmother back in 1994.

In other words… I am toast.

I have basically been a stay at home Mom since 1994 when me and then fiance’ decided it was best for me to stay at home and raise our son rather than work.At the time it was a best thing, but now that I am basically single, I need a job and fast.

While contemplating my job opportunities, it dawned on me that I have absolutely no marketable skills at all.Yeah, I went to beauty school at my Grandmother’s insistence, but I would rather get my hair done than actually do someone else’s.Hair is just not my passion.

So what is my passion…? I dunno. I thought I knew at one time, but everytime I moved towards that passion I kept getting shot down… nothing ever panned out.Eventually all the zest I had for that particular “Passion” vanished.Today when I think about it I don’t even get excited anymore.

Yesterday while taking the kids to the park I saw the new Staples store they were building and thought why not try and get a job there as a cashier or something. It’s close to home and the kid’s school so at least I wouldn’t spend hours on a train or bus commuting, coming home late and tired.

Staples… lol… never saw myself working there. As a matter of fact, I have never even been inside of a Staples.

I can see me now “Hi, I’m Shawna. Can I help you pick out an ink pen today? LOL!

good luck with the job search. i’m kind of like you–longest job held was for 1 year. only difference i’m 26, but i don’t plan on holding a job again. working on being my own employer. but here’s some advice: you can enroll in a community college. since you’re unemployed and single you can get financial aid which will help somewhat with living expenses. taking a variety of classes may help to spark your interest in something. good luck. and i love your site! nicely designed

What do you mean you’ve never held a job? Aren’t you a web designer extroardaire, forum creator and gifted writer? Those all sound like ‘jobs’ to me! …and as soon as you can figure out how to get paid for doing those things, you will be well on your way.

Good Luck on your first day. Just remember, a job is like a seminar. You’ll know more the more time elapses.

I have had a job since I was 14 years old, and now I’d kinda like a sabbatical! :) worthwatering.blogspot.com

I’m presently working on trying to turn this online thing into a full time job.Nothing would please me more than to be able to work right from home.

I love web design and running my forum and I make a little money off that now, but definitely not enough to live off of.

Don’t laugh… but not too long ago I really wanted to run a magazine for Black women.Something similar to what Honey used to be before it was butchered and eventually discontinued.

I really felt I had a gift for that and I know in my heart if I had the right connections I could have made it a success.

I’m also pretty darn good at web promotion. If it’s one thing I know… it’s how to get people to visit my sites. All of my sites have been a success, jut not financially a success.

Hmmm… who knows, maybe the feeling will hit me again and I’ll look into the magazine thing once more.

Please tell me that you are getting some kind of finacial support from your former fiance’. Since it was not your decision alone to stop working. On Oprah I heard her say, “if you are making $10 and hour or less in the U.S. you are at risk of being homeless.” It seems to me this website is your passion. Sounds like a degree in Computer Science to me. Yes, education is the great equalizer. It doesn’t have to be college it can be a trade school like Devry. And NO, It’s never too late to go to college/school. Here’s some info for you: ‘Technology has created a tremendous shift in certain occupations. Biggest changes in the number of jobs, 1992 to 2002. Computer systems analysts and scientist 1,000,000′ My source is the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statics from an article printed in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper titled “It’s never too late to get [a] college degree” dated 11/28/04. I’ve keep this article because I wanted to use it to inspire people who think it is too late to go back to college.

Hi Lorraine… thank you for stopping by :)

Financially I am not in dire straights. My children’s Father has always been very open with his money, but it is just that… HIS Money. It’s time I start making my own money now… time to grow up is what I call it.

Anyway, I had been avoiding the whole going back to school thing because of the time it would take away from my kids, but I may not have a choice at this point.

Thank you for the ideas… it’s something to think about.

    :)
