I Want A God That Helps Pay My Bills

May 25th, 2006 ( May 25th, 2006 )

I recently read the following statement made by Mary J. Blige to a reporter on being a born again Christian:

“He wants me to be the hottest thing on the block.

“I don’t know what kind of God the rest of y’all are serving, but the God I serve says, ‘Mary, you need to be the hottest thing this year, and I’m gonna make sure you’re doing that.’”

I knew this comment would not sit well with Black folk, and if the response to her comments on my forum are any indication, I was correct.

I knew Black people wouldn’t be feeling Mary’s comments mainly because we have been conditioned by the [tag]Black Church[/tag] to believe that poverty makes us special in the eyes of God.The church is always talking about God loving the poor and cherishing the poor, and though I do believe that, I do not believe a loving and caring God would want his people to live in poverty.

Ever watch white Preachers on TV? How often do they mention poverty or [tag]God[/tag] loving the poor? I’ve never heard it.White Preachers are always talking “Prosperity” and “Blessings”.Black churches are always talking survival and just hanging on from one po azz moment to the next.

Why would my God want me to be poor? Why would he want me to struggle from one moment to the next. No, I don’t believe God wants us to be Bill Gates, having more than we need while others starve. But I do believe our God wants us to be comfortable and yes… Prosperous. Why wouldn’t the Creator of something as divine as me (and all Black people) want us to have the things our hearts desire.

Why wouldn’t my God want me to be draped in beautiful diamonds and furs… if my heart desires such? The Bible speaks of such luxuries and Blessings, but for some reason having money and material posessions are seen as being anti-Christian.

Well, I say it’s time we get with the program.I want that God that’s been hooking up white folks for years.I want a God that puts money in pocket and food on the table.I want a God that looks to elevate me, not keep me shackled to the bottom as some form of test to prove I can stay righteous and faithful through despair. No, that’s the God of poor folks and y’all can keep him. This Sista wants a God that will help her pay the bills.

Go Mary :D

As you say Shawna, I’m going to have to let this marinate for a minute before I have my say.

Haha… I know how hard it must be for you to fathom that Jesus Christ may actually want you to be happy and prosperous.Take some time to think it over

Not only do I want a god that will help me pay my bills, but I want a god that will implant in me the ability and desire to pay my own bills. Black folk, we’ve got to stop thinking that praying and praising is enough. If your faith in God is so strong, then ACT on it. Pray for prosperity, and then ACT prosperous. If you don’t know what prosperous people do on a daily basis, make it your business to find out.

I think that Christianity is different than God. Look at the universe that God has created; it is immensely abundant. If you are a Christian, why would you believe that God’s son, Christ, would encourage lack, despair, desperation and poverty as virtues? If this is your interpretation of Christianity, keep it because I want no part of it! I want everything good that I can get, achievement, children, paid bills and diamonds included!

if God’s the being that you pray for to get out of such predicaments, then he’s the being that put you there as well.

maybe God’s plan is for (insert random person or persons here) to strafe the poverty line.
