Sometimes I wonder if I am inadvertently causing problems for myself and my children based on how I view the world. All of this came to mind after I read the story of Prince Jones who was killed by the police back in 2000 while driving to his fiance’s house.
Prince, like so many other Brotha’s was just minding his business, trying to do the right thing when his life was taken for apparently no other reason than he was Black… or was it?
You see, I think had Prince not been Black he would be alive today.I rarely if ever hear of such a thing happening to a white male. And contrary to popular belief, White males do indeed commit crimes and go to jail. What is rare, is for another innocent White male to be killed for the crime or supposed crime of another while just going about the daily routine of his life as was the case with Prince Jones.
At any rate, what happend to Prince Jones was every Black Mother’s worst fear.Ask any Sista who is the mother of a Black male child and she will tell you that the fear of losing her son to either Black on Black violence or cop on Black violence is at the top of the list of things that keep her awake at night.
Here though, is where my dilemma starts.
Sometimes I cannot help but wonder if I am creating problems for myself and my children by discussing the so called “Race” issue with them?
I’ll continue my thoughts later…
